Objective

Develop innovative ways for people to visualize and engage with the broader historical context and cultural significance of Lothal.

Context

Lothal, a prominent city of the ancient Harappan civilization, is renowned for its advanced urban planning, maritime trade, and pioneering dockyard. This project aims to bring Lothal to life through a digital experience that captures its historical significance and architectural marvels through a museum experience.

Transforming Artifacts into a Lived Experience

We had a rich collection of artifacts from Lothal, which provided critical insights into the city's planning, history and, international significance. However, artifacts alone could not fully convey the tangible and intangible heritage of ancient Lothal.

Strategy Overview

Contextualizing Artifacts with Stories

From Objects to Narratives: Each artifact was used as a touchstone to create narratives about daily life, trade practices, and cultural rituals in Lothal. This helped transform static objects into dynamic stories.

We used mediums like - publication, brochure, infographics etc.

“The exhibition aims to showcase the extraordinary history and beauty of Harappan pottery, trade and ship building while bringing to life the narratives about everyday life of this one of the most essential of Harappan cities.”

Visualizing Tangible Heritage

Expanding on the exhibition, an online digital experience offers the opportunity to explore:

  • Three-dimensional, 360-degree views of the museum space

  • Selected works of pottery and other groups/ collections of the artifacts.

  • AR feature to see the artefacts anywhere and everywhere

  • Interesting factual curated series from Lothal.
